When you are living in Taiwan or anywhere in general, you have a sense to do more exploration. There is a sense to discover all that you can see, do, eat, and experience. I am always wanting to see more, do more, eat more, and be able to see what a country has to offer. I am going to share with you all the top 5 outdoor adventure things you could do while visiting or living in Taiwan.

Here are the Top 5 Adventure Activities in Taiwan:

Hiking:

One of the biggest things people do in Taiwan is to go hiking. It is just not a matter of finding a nice place hike through the woods type of deal. This country is full of mountains. It is considered the fourth highest island in the world. With 100 peaks over 3000 meters, there are so many opportunities to find awesome adventurous trails. You do not even have to go far.

Right outside of Taipei there is Yaming Mountain, Elephant Mountain, and Tiger Mountain. These are fairly close and easy to get to with plenty of routes and sights. Plus you can go to the Ruifang area and there some good places like Teapot mountain or even Stegosaurus Ridge.

My favorite Hikes:

When going hiking just make sure you take the essentials:

  • Backpack
  • Water
  • Some food
  • A cellphone or map
  • A friend or two
  • Maps.me app
  • Money

These things can help you out if ever into trouble. It is always good to be prepared. Hiking is fun, but if something bad happens it is always good to have people around you, and the ability to stay safe. Have fun and go hiking. It is good, and makes you feel good.

River Tracing:

While in Taiwan, you will notice that during the summer months it is hot. It is like the heat and humidity like Florida. Everyone is sweaty, carrying umbrellas, wanting to be in the A/C, and just staying cool. If you need an adventure, and hiking seems way to difficult and hot, try to go River Tracing.

River Tracing is all about walking up the rivers to go to a great sight, usually a waterfall. People love river tracing once it is experienced. It keeps the body cool. There is climbing, swimming, and the eventual great sight of a waterfall. Most people can either rent special shoes that have felt on the bottom. These shoes help with not slipping on the rocks as you walk through rivers. It is not 100% guranteed, but it is better than anything else you would use to go walking through the river.

If it is a hot summer or spring day, find some friends, do a meet-up, and then prepare to go River Tracing. It is fun, wet, full-body workout, and it will bring you to great destinations that have been unknown to you. One of my favorites is the Wormhole. Get out and go for a river trace.

Things to bring:

  • River Tracing Shoes
  • Bathing suit
  • Towel
  • Helmet(optional)
  • Lifejacket (optional)

Hot Springs and Camping:

During the cooler months of the year brings in new activities, new fun, and new adventures. Taiwan is Volcanic island with mostly dormant or dead Volcanoes. Since there were once Volcanoes on this island there happens to be some great thermal energy. The island has a ton of hot springs all around. There are hot springs you can pay for or there are the wild ones. Those are open to the public.

Hot springs tend to be a place to go travel to, camp by, and experience the warmth as the winter months come. There are tons of hot springs. With each and every year, more and more get discovered. It is always a good time to take a weekend trip, go camping somewhere and find a hot springs.

Rock Climbing:

I have a bit of a fear of heights. I have not yet ventured to the tops of the earth with a harness, rope, and helmet. If you are into that there are a ton of people that love Rock Climbing. There are places like Longdong in the North Eastren part of the country that people go and do rock climbing. There are meet-ups, the Taipei Hikers go, and various other groups. If you are afraid, there are also plenty of gyms, bouldering locations, and great indoor facilities to try and experience some rock climbing.

Surfing:

If you are looking for some good adventure in the water, look no further. Taiwan has surfing. The surfing culture is not big yet, but it is growing. There are plenty of good spots to surf in Yilan, Kenting, Taitung, and other places around the North Eastern coast of Taiwan. The waves are not the ones you will see in Hawaii or other places that surfers flock to, but the waves are good enough. During Typhoon season (summer), the waves can get up to 3 meters. I know quite a few people that surf, paddle board, and just enjoy the water activities.
