Hello my name is Steve Cummings. I created this blog to talk about the many adventures, stories, and tips that I can share with people. This blog has become so much more. I have met my wife, Sarah, and we both now teach English, travel, and enjoy life in Taiwan. Here is how it all started for me.

The change of my mindset:

A few months ago, I sat at my desk wondering what the point of life was. Thinking to myself what am I doing at this desk just sitting and wondering why do I watch everyone else just pass me by.

I sat there noticing that I was not very happy with my job. I took a look at my life, and realized that I am 30 years old, not married, no kids, and my job was not bringing me happiness.

I figured something needed to change. There were people traveling the world seeing it piece by piece, and I wondered why I cannot do the same.

The world is a big place and so many people were enjoying it, while living cheaply, meeting new people, and experiencing new things.

Inspiration for Travel:

With the multitude of free time sitting at my desk during hours at my job, I decided that I needed to do some more traveling. I read multiple blogs about travel. I started reading books like Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel by Rolf Potts and How to Travel the World on $50 a Day: Revised: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter by Matt Kepnes.

I realized travel was doable. The problem was that I had no money to sustain travel. The solution would be to work over seas as an English teacher.

Income Needed for Travel:

I had tried to become a teacher in Greenville, SC, but without a teaching degree it was very hard to become a teacher, especially a history teacher.

I ended looking up schools to get certified as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher. Then I came across International TEFL Academy in Chicago, IL. They had a couple of courses in different cities such as Boston, Seattle, Prague, just to name a few, and I chose to take the onsite course in Chicago, IL.

Picking a Destination:

I then needed to decide where this adventure would begin. If I needed money and lots of it, South Korea would be the place to venture too. So I sat my eyes on South Korea. Unfortunately, as a Floridian living in South Carolina, I had grown accustomed to warm weather, and I had heard about some cold weather in Korea, so I needed a second place to look too. A friend of mine happened to be living in a tiny island nation called Taiwan, and she convinced me to set my eyes for Taiwan. My adventure would begin in Taiwan, and from there I would be venturing out around the world exploring and writing about these amazing adventures as I work as a teacher. I bought a one-way ticket that cost just $5.60, and I was on my way. I would do my best to give tips and guides to help those wanting to free themselves of the 9-5 monotony of life and seek some exciting opportunities.

I feel anyone can travel and do it for cheap while having fun and creating new memories.

This is why I created the blog Cummings & Goings.
